Character Counting Guide
Why Character Count Matters
Every platform imposes hard limits on text length — and even where limits are soft, going over means truncated previews, hidden content, or lower search rankings. This tool shows you exactly where you stand against each limit as you type.
Platform Character Limits — 2026 Reference Table
All character limits shown below are verified against official platform documentation as of May 2026.
| Platform / Context | Character Limit | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Twitter / X Post | 280 | URLs always count as 23 characters |
| SEO Meta Description | 160 | Google typically displays 120–160 characters |
| SEO Meta Title | 60 | Optimal 50–60; longer titles get truncated in SERPs |
| Instagram Caption | 2,200 | Only first 125 characters show without tapping "more" |
| LinkedIn Post | 3,000 | Text truncates at 210 in feed — lead with the hook |
| Facebook Post | 63,206 | Practical display limit is ~500 before "See more" |
| Pinterest Description | 500 | Only first 50 characters show in grid view |
| YouTube Description | 5,000 | First 157 characters are visible without expanding |
| SMS (GSM-7) | 160 | Multi-part messages use 153 characters per segment |
Twitter/X Character Counter — Key Rules
Twitter/X enforces a 280-character limit on all posts. A few things to keep in mind:
- URLs always count as 23 characters, regardless of their actual length — Twitter wraps all links through t.co.
- Emojis count as 2 characters each (they are encoded as 2-byte Unicode).
- Spaces and punctuation count exactly as typed.
- Images, videos, and polls attached to a tweet do not consume any characters.
Meta Description Length — SEO Best Practice
Google displays approximately 120–160 characters of your meta description in search results before truncating with "…". Descriptions shorter than 120 characters are less likely to be shown verbatim — Google may rewrite them using page content. Descriptions longer than 160 characters will be cut off, potentially hiding your call to action.
The meta title (page title tag) is capped at roughly 50–60 characters in Google SERPs. Going over means the title is truncated with an ellipsis; going under wastes valuable keyword space.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I count characters for Twitter/X?
Paste your tweet text into the counter above. The Twitter/X row shows your live character count against the 280-character limit and turns red when you go over. Remember that each URL counts as 23 characters and each emoji counts as 2.
What is the ideal meta description length?
Aim for 120–160 characters. Shorter descriptions may be rewritten by Google; longer ones get truncated in search results. Use this counter to keep your meta description in the green zone.
What is the ideal meta title length?
50–60 characters is the standard recommendation. Google renders page titles up to roughly 600 pixels wide — which translates to about 60 average characters. Longer titles are cut off with "…" in the SERP.
Does this counter count spaces?
Yes. Spaces and all punctuation are included in the character count, which matches how every major platform counts characters.
How does Instagram count characters in captions?
Instagram allows up to 2,200 characters per caption. However, only the first 125 characters are visible in the feed before the "more" link. Lead with your most important content and keep key messages in the first 125 characters.
Is my text stored or sent to a server?
No. All counting happens locally in your browser using JavaScript. Your text never leaves your device and is never stored anywhere.
What is the LinkedIn post character limit?
LinkedIn allows up to 3,000 characters per post. In the feed, only about 210 characters are shown before the "…see more" link — so the first sentence or two are your most valuable real estate.
How do I count characters for an SMS?
A standard SMS using the GSM-7 character set supports 160 characters per message. If your message exceeds 160 characters, it is split into multi-part segments of 153 characters each (7 characters are used for segment headers). Keep messages under 160 to avoid the extra cost of multi-part SMS.
