Image Watermark Guide
Who Should Use This Watermark Tool?
Anyone who needs to add a watermark to a photo online without uploading it to a server. Common use cases:
- Photographers - add a copyright watermark to portfolio shots and proofs before sharing with clients or on social media.
- E-commerce sellers - brand product photos with a shop name or URL before listing on marketplaces.
- Content creators - protect original work posted on Instagram, Pinterest, or blogs with a copyright notice or handle.
- Stock photographers - send watermarked proofs before final delivery; tiled mode makes the watermark impossible to crop out.
Why Watermark Your Images?
- Deter unauthorised use - a visible watermark is the simplest first line of defence against image theft.
- Establish brand identity - every share of your image carries your name back to you.
- Protect client proofs - tiled watermarks survive cropping and clone-stamp attempts.
- No quality loss - the original file is never modified; watermarking produces a separate download.
- Complete privacy - processing is 100% local; your image never leaves your device.
What Makes a Good Watermark?
- Visible but not distracting: An opacity of 40–70% keeps your watermark readable without overwhelming the image content.
- Consistent position: Bottom-right is the most common choice for photographers - it's out of the main subject but still clearly visible. Center tiling is harder to remove and better for stock images.
- Contrasting color: White (#ffffff) works on most photos; use black or a brand color for light-background images.
- Include the © symbol: Copy–paste © or type "(c)" - it signals copyright at a glance.
How to Watermark an Image - 3 Steps
Step 1: Upload Your Image
Drag and drop a JPG, PNG, or WebP file into the upload area, or click "Select Image" to browse. A thumbnail preview appears immediately.
Step 2: Customize Your Watermark
Type your watermark text (e.g., "© Jane Smith Photography 2026"), choose a position from the 3×3 grid, set the font size, opacity, and color. Works with JPG, PNG, and WebP. Enable "Tile" to repeat the watermark across the entire image - useful for stock photos and proofs.
Step 3: Apply and Download
Click "Apply Watermark." A preview appears instantly. If you want to tweak any setting, adjust it and click Apply again. When you're happy, click "Download Watermarked Image" to save the result in the same format as your original.
Single Position vs. Tiled Watermark
A single positioned watermark is the standard choice for branded photos shared on social media or websites - subtle, professional, and non-intrusive. A tiled watermark repeats the text at a diagonal angle across the entire image, making it much harder to crop or clone-stamp out. Use tiling for waterproof proofs you send to clients before final delivery, or for stock images where you want maximum protection.
| Mode | Best for | Removability | Coverage |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single position | Branded social posts, portfolio galleries | Easy to crop out | One corner or center |
| Tiled (repeat) | Client proofs, stock photos, drafts | Very hard to remove | Entire image at diagonal |
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the tool add its own watermark?
No. Your watermark text is the only thing added. We never overlay a QuickTooly logo or any other branding - unlike many free online tools.
Is my image uploaded to a server?
No. All processing happens locally in your browser using the Canvas API. Your image never leaves your device. This makes the tool safe for client photos, personal images, and sensitive material.
What image formats are supported?
JPG, PNG, and WebP. The watermarked image is downloaded in the same format as the original. PNG files preserve transparency; JPG files are output with a white background fill.
Can I watermark multiple images at once?
Currently the tool processes one image at a time. For bulk conversion or format changes, see the Image Converter.
Why does my white watermark not show on white images?
Switch the color to black (#000000) or a contrasting tone. The color picker lets you pick any hex color to match or contrast your image background.
Can I remove a watermark with this tool?
No - this tool adds watermarks, it does not remove them. Removing watermarks from images you do not own is a copyright violation.
What font does the watermark use?
The watermark uses your system's default sans-serif font, rendered in bold for maximum readability at any size. This ensures consistent results across all major operating systems without any font loading overhead.
What opacity should I use for my watermark?
40–60% is the sweet spot for most photos - readable without overwhelming the image. Higher opacity (70–100%) is better for proofs where removal deterrence matters more than aesthetics. Lower opacity (10–30%) suits subtle branding on clean, light images. The opacity slider lets you preview the result before downloading.
