EXIF Metadata Guide

What Is EXIF Data — and Why Should You Remove It?

Every time you take a photo, your camera or smartphone silently embeds a packet of information called EXIF data (Exchangeable Image File Format). This hidden metadata can include your exact GPS coordinates, the date and time the photo was taken, your device make and model, lens settings, and even your name or copyright notice — all invisible to the naked eye, but readable by anyone who downloads the image file.

Why Remove EXIF Metadata?

  • Protect your location privacy: GPS coordinates embedded in a single photo can pinpoint your home address or daily routine.
  • Journalist and source safety: Photos taken in the field can reveal when and exactly where you were — removing EXIF before publishing protects sources and reporters.
  • Reduce file size slightly: Stripping EXIF removes a few kilobytes of overhead — useful when serving thousands of images on a web page.
  • Prevent device fingerprinting: Camera make, model, and serial number can identify the specific device used to take a photo.
  • Comply with GDPR and privacy laws: Publishing photos with embedded personal data (name, GPS) without consent may violate data protection regulations.

How to Remove EXIF Data — 3 Simple Steps

Step 1: Upload Your Photo

Drag and drop your image onto the upload area or click to browse. Supports JPG, PNG, WebP, HEIC, and TIFF files up to 50MB. No file ever leaves your browser — processing happens entirely on your device.

Step 2: Review the Embedded Metadata

The tool instantly displays all EXIF fields grouped by privacy risk: GPS location (high risk, highlighted in red), timestamps and device info (medium risk), and technical camera settings (low risk). You can see exactly what data is stored before you decide to remove it.

Step 3: Remove EXIF & Download

Click "Remove EXIF & Download" to get a clean copy of your image. For JPEG files, metadata is surgically stripped without re-encoding — preserving 100% of the original image quality. For PNG and WebP, the image is losslessly re-rendered to remove any embedded chunks.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does removing EXIF reduce image quality?

No — for JPEG files, this tool surgically removes the metadata header without touching a single pixel of the image data, so quality is preserved at 100%. For PNG and WebP, the canvas re-render is lossless, so quality is also unaffected.

Are my images uploaded to a server?

No. All processing happens entirely in your browser using the JavaScript File API. Your images never leave your device, making this tool safe for sensitive, confidential, or personal photos.

Does my photo always contain GPS data?

Only if location access was enabled on your device when the photo was taken. Most modern smartphones embed GPS by default unless you explicitly disable "Location" access for the camera app in your device settings. Photos taken with a standalone digital camera typically do not include GPS unless the camera has a built-in GPS receiver.

What image formats are supported?

The tool reads EXIF from JPEG, PNG, WebP, HEIC/HEIF, and TIFF files. EXIF removal works for all supported formats. JPEG is the most common format to carry EXIF data; PNG and WebP can carry metadata but usually carry less of it.

Will social media strip EXIF automatically?

Most major platforms (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter/X) strip EXIF when you upload, but this is not guaranteed across all platforms or CDNs. If you are sharing images directly via email, Dropbox, or a website, the original EXIF data is typically preserved. It is safest to strip EXIF yourself before sharing.

Can I batch-remove EXIF from multiple images?

The current version processes one image at a time. For bulk EXIF removal across many files, consider a local tool such as ExifTool (command-line) or the "Image Compressor" tool on this site which also strips metadata as part of compression.
